The Elevator Pitch

Stuff you need to know...

A literary agent can be the magic ingredient in an author’s career, helping to conjure up publishing opportunities, matching you up with the right deals, protecting your interests and providing advice and support. But it’s not easy to acquire an agent, especially if you are an aspiring or emerging writer or illustrator. That’s where the Elevator Pitch program comes in: a unique opportunity to present yourself and your work to some of Australia’s most dynamic agents, Brian Cook of The Authors’ Agent and Alex Adsett of Alex Adsett Publishing Services, after preparation which will give you the best possible chance to attract their interest.

The Elevator Pitch program (held over two weekends)

The Preparatory Day
: a morning of advice and pitch tips, followed by an afternoon of practice pitching, at which you can hone your skills in front of local publishing professionals.
The Discussion: Our two visiting literary agents will feature in a discussion event at the Readers Companion bookshop, talking about what an agent does, and what they look for.
The Pitches: Each pitcher will have a 10 minute one-on-one slot to present themselves and their work. Preference for pitch slots will be given to people who have booked the full Elevator Pitch program, with one pitch slot guaranteed for each full booking.

What the agents are looking for:

Brian and Alex have advised that writers in any genre and for any age group are welcome to pitch to them, as are illustrators.

Please note, slots will be allocated by the Elevator Pitch co-ordinators and you will be advised of the time of your pitch and the agent you will be pitching to.
