In just its second year of operation, the ARA Historical Novel Prize is now worth a total of $100,000 in prize monies.

In exciting news, the HNSA have announced that the 2021 Prize will incorporate a category for outstanding Children and Young Adult (CYA) literature, in addition to the Adult category.

ARA Group Founder, Executive Chair and Managing Director, Edward Federman, said he is determined to expand the prize funding to support more of Australasia's most talented authors during a time of immense uncertainty.

The New England Writers' Centre is proud to be associated with the Historical Novel Prize, as part of the Prize sub-committee and in the administration of entries.

Submissions closed 14 June 2021

Details of the Prize, Definition of Historical Fiction, Rules and further information are all available from the Historical Novel Society Australasia website.  

Please first refer to eligibility criteria to determine if a book is eligible and read the Prize Rules closely.

​A nomination form (download separately) and proof of payment of entry fee (via a Trybooking ticket receipt) must accompany each entry, whether print or digital.  (Links will be available prior to the opening of the Prize.)
Print submissions

Three copies of each book entered must be sent to the print receiving office. Advanced Review Copies are acceptable for books due to be released between 14 -30 June 2021.

Digital submissions

An EPUB of the published book must be sent to the digital receiving email address as an attachment:  ARAHistNovelPrize@gmail.com.

This file must be the final, published version, not a proof copy or manuscript. A link to a digital bookstore where the book is currently for sale (or on presale with a release date on or before 30 June) must be provided.

No other digital format will be accepted eg PDF or MOBI files. No transfers via the Cloud will be accepted.

The key dates for the 2021 ARA Historical Novel Prize are:

Awards open:  9AM (AEST)  14 April 2021
Awards close:  5pm (AEST) 14 June 2021
Longlist announced (nine books): 8 September 2021
Shortlist announced (three books): 22 September 2021
Winners Announced: 22 October 2021
Winners will be announced at the HNSA biennial conference in October
