We are very excited to announce that the winner of the 2020 Varuna-NEWC Fellowship is Helena Pastor. Helena is a regional writer from Armidale. Through memoir and fiction, she aims to encourage discussion around topics close to her heart including all stages of motherhood, the aftershocks of war, and growing up in an immigrant family.
Chosen by the Varuna judges from a shortlist of two, Helena's winning submission included an extract from her manuscript and a detailed synopsis and work plan.
Varuna Executive Director Veechi Stuart said: ‘Varuna selected Helena’s work because of the strength of her craft in exploring the psyche of immigration and multicultural Australia through her personal experiences. We look forward to welcoming her to Varuna in 2021.’

Thank you Jax!We also want to congratulate Jax Bakewell for being shortlisted for her submission, Brontë: a historical novel praised by the judges as having an original approach to narrating the life of the Bronte sisters, based on considerable research and with an impressive development of period-specific dialogue.
We wish you all the best for your project and look forward to seeing more of your work in the future. |
